This powder blue agate, hidden in the quiet isolation of the African desert, was first uncovered in the early 1960's by an American prospector named George Swanson. While traveling in outer space, Dr. Harrison H. Schmitt geologist of Apollo 17 said, "If there ever was a fragile appearing piece of blue in space, it's the earth right now." Thus, the space blue Agate has special significance.

Because of this unique gemstone and its remarkable similarity to our earth as seen from outer space, the Tyler Ecology Award has adopted the stone as a symbol of world ecology.
