Grosgrain

Grosgrain ribbon has a very tight weave and narrow ribbing, giving it a ridged texture. The tight weave makes grosgrain very sturdy, and it almost feels like corded fabric, with ribs running crosswise. Typically, both edges of the ribbon are bordered with another rib, which keeps the grosgrain ribbon crisp. At cut ends, grosgrain may be sewn over or treated with a dot of fraycheck to prevent unraveling.

Silk is the ancient traditional material for grosgrain, but more often it is made of cotton/rayon and the ribbon can also be made from nylon and synthetics. As a general rule, grosgrain ribbon looks slightly glossy, and it can be solid or striped.
